Stock Certificate signed: "Robert T. Lincoln" as President
of The Pullman Company, 1p, 8¾x6. New York, 1906 December 15.
Certificate No. 7542. Certifying "that Mrs. Harriet Solomon, or bearer is
entitled to Twenty Dollars of the Capital Stock of the Pullman Company...."
Robert Todd Lincoln (1843-1926), the eldest and only surviving son
of President Abraham Lincoln, was Secretary of War in Garfield's Cabinet
(1881-1885) and U.S. Minister to Great Britain from 1889-1893. In 1897,
upon the death of George Pullman, Lincoln, who had moved to Chicago in May 1865,
the month after his father's assassination, became acting President of
Pullman's company. He served as permanent President from 1901-1911
and Chairman of the Board from 1911-1922. Lincoln was present at three
presidential assassinations (those of his father, and of Garfield and
McKinley). He made his last public appearance on May 30, 1922 at the
dedication of the Lincoln Memorial and is buried in Arlington National
Cemetery. Lightly creased. Folds, light vertical fold touches the "R" in Robert.
Cancellation holes touch all signatures, affecting "Lincoln".
