Biography signed: "Robert V. Bruce/June 11, 1988" in black ink, 5x3 card. Signed June 11, 1988. Typed caption on card: "Robert V. Bruce recipient of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for History for 'The Launching of Modern American Science 1846-1876' that shows how a century ago, the scientific community in the USA was mediocre,'". To the caption, Bruce has handwritten, "but organized itself and laid the foundation for the 20th century preeminence." Robert V. Bruce (1923-2008) won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in History for his book The Launching of Modern American Science 1846-1876. A veteran of World War II, he was a professor at Boston University, University of Bridgeport, Lawrence Academy at Groton, and the University of Wisconsin. An author of several biographies, Bruce accused Scottish historian James Mackay for plagiarizing his book Bell: Alexander Graham Bell and The Conquest of Solitude. They settled out of court and MacKay's phonies were destroyed. Bruce was also a Guggenheim Fellow (1957), Huntington Library Fellow (1966) and President of the Lincoln Group of Boston. Toned.
