ROBERT STRAUB
As Governor, he signs a typed letter about a private collection offered for
use in Oregon University's Centennial and the US Bicentennial.
Typed Letter signed: "Bob Straub", 1 page, 8¼x11. Salem, Oregon,
1975 August 25. On Governor's stationery to Edward P. McKean Smith, The
Latch String Studio, Coos Bay, Oregon. In full: "I don't easily forget
meetings, however brief, with dynamic individuals such as yourself. I have
shared a copy of your letter with one of the coordinators of the University of
Oregon's Centennial. He is enthusiastic about the possibility of displaying your
collection throughout the state during 1976, the University's Centennial year,
as a Bicentennial tribute. Utilization of the expert services and broad
contracts of the Statewide Service Program of the University's Museum of Art
would seem to be indicated. I am advised that appropriate people are
investigating the matter. If you have further questions, Hope Hughes Pressman,
Centennial Coordinator at the University, will be happy to consult with you.
Sincerely". Robert Straub (1920-2002) was Lane County Commissioner, Oregon
state senator and then Treasurer (1965-1973). He ran for Governor 4 times,
winning 1 term (1975-1979). Straub, a Democrat, promoted environmental
protection, senior citizen services; and property tax and utility rate relief.
