(1926-2005, born in Arlington, Massachusetts) was an American poet and a
founder of the Black Mountain avante-garde movement of the 1950s. A Harvard
dropout, he spent a year driving a truck in India and Burma for the American
Field Service and lived on a poultry farm before finally receving a degree from
Black Mountain College. He joined Charles Olson ont he faculty there and was
editor of the Black Mountain Review, the journal of the Black Mountain
movement, in its three years. A masterful poet, Creeley's poems were short, to
the point and self-contained and marked by economic, irreverent language and
understatement and earned him the Bollingen Prize for achievement in poetry
in 1999. He was also New York's poet laureate from 1989 to 1991 and
taught poetry at several universities, including the State University of New
York at Buffalo.Creeley published a number of poetry collections
including For Love (1962), Pieces (1968), Later (1979),
Memory Gardens (1986), Windows (1990) and If I Were Writing
This (2003). Lightly toned and bowed, otherwise in fine
condition.
