WHEELER AND WOOLSEY: BERT WHEELER and ROBERT WOOLSEY
14x11 image of the comedians smiling broadly at the camera. Woolsey, shown here with a cigar, is a rare signature.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Princess Shu Shila -/Yours for fun/[Here he has self-caricature]/Robert Woolsey", "Bert Wheeler" . B/w, 14x11. BERT WHEELER (1895-1968), born Albert Jerome Wheeler, was on vaudeville stages by age 10, and was the featured comedian in The Ziegfeld Follies of 1923. Wheeler is perhaps best known for appearing in Rio Rita in both the Florenz Ziegfeld stage version and the RKO film version. A star of vaudeville, Wheeler was teamed with Robert Woolsey from the time they both appeared in Rio Rita (1927) until Woolsey's death in 1938. Wheeler appeared in a number of feature films from 1929 through 1941 and later guest starred on television in Brave Eagle (1955) and The Defenders (1961). ROBERT WOOLSEY (1888-1938) was a jockey until injured in a fall from a horse, after which he turned to acting. He found success on Broadway as "Mortimer Pottle" in W. C. Fields' Poppy (1923). He often appeared in films singly, but is best remembered for his pairing with Wheeler in a string of comedies from 1931 to 1935, beginning with Caught Plastered. Terminally ill by 1937, he struggled to finish his last picture, High Flying. Worn. Creased. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
