ROBIN BAILEY
Contract to appear in a West End production of the play Beethoven's Tenth
Contract signed twice: "Robin Bailey", 2 pages (front and verso), 8¼x11½. Signed on each page. Also initialed "RB" at an irrelevant clause stricken from the agreement. London, 1983 April 6. Contract with Triumph Apollo Productions, Ltd., for Bailey's appearance in the part of "Stephen Fauldgate" in the play Beethoven's Tenth, with a first performance on April 11. English actor Robin Bailey (1919-1999) often played upper-class, tradition-bound Englishmen, like his Justice Graves in Rumpole of the Bailey, but was fondly remembered for his Uncle Mort in BBC-TV's I Didn't Know You Cared (1975-1979, and afterwards on radio). He played Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in The Gathering Storm (1974). Bailey, who bore a resemblance to Rex Harrison, was a surprise choice to play Henry Higgins in the first Australian production of My Fair Lady, and proved a big success there. Bailey was a popular reader on audio books, including the novels of Agatha Christie and Neville Shute. In Beethoven's Tenth, a play by Peter Ustinov, Bailey played the starring role of a modern music critic transformed by a visit from the long-dead composer. Two horizontal folds. Staple holes at top left corner (torn to top edge). Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. Portions of this document have been obscured to protect sensitive information. The original contract does not contain these concealing marks.
