ROBIN SWADOS
The actor and playwright sends requested photographs to John Willis,
Editor of Theatre World
Typed letter signed: "Robin Swados", 8½x11. October 12, 1984.
New York City, New York. In part: "Dear Mr. Willis: Thank you so much
for your note! As per your request, I am enclosing two recent head shots
[items not included]. I have a distinct preference for the horizontal one and
would prefer it be used if at all possible; if not, the other is O.K., I guess.
In any event, I'm grateful for your interest". Robin Swados (b. 1953)
pursued an acting career in New York and Los Angeles before making a
breakthrough as a playwright with A Quiet End (1985). This play, among
the first to highlight the AIDS crisis, has been performed on regional
stages nationwide, and featured and excerpted in several anthologies. Swados
worked as an editor at several publishing houses, including Knopf and Doubleday,
and as a freelance travel writer. He is reportedly working on another play.
John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the
beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until
2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians
of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World
Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards.
Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in
Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Heavy creases
throughout. Corners slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
