ROBIN SWADOS
The playwright invites John Willis, Editor of Theatre World, to come see his most recent show
Typed letter signed: "Robin Swados", 1 page, 8½x11. October, 1984. In full: "Dear Mr. Willis: In 1977 I produced HELLO & GOODBYE with Franklyn Lenthall as director, and you were gracious enough to include us in your annual that year. I was really honored! I have been in Los Angeles for six years and recently (and permanently) returned to New York. I have spent much of my time working on OBLOMOV, once again with Franklyn Lenthall as director, and I would be delighted to have you come and see the show. With all best wishes". Robin Swados (b. 1953) pursued an acting career in New York and Los Angeles before making a breakthrough as a playwright with A Quiet End (1985). This play, among the first to highlight the AIDS crisis, has been performed on regional stages nationwide, and featured and excerpted in several anthologies. Swados worked as an editor at several publishing houses, including Knopf and Doubleday, and as a freelance travel writer. He is reportedly working on another play. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Heavily creased on right margin from moisture damage. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
