Marciano (1923-1969), the World Heavyweight Champion from 1952-1956,
retired on April 27, 1956 with a 49-0-0 professional record that included 43
KOs. When Marciano, the only undefeated champion in any weight class,
announced his retirement, he was already experiencing financial troubles. His
manager, Al Weill, had taken 45% of Marciano's income, and an investigation
showed that Weill had skimmed an additional $10,000 that Marciano had earned
from promotions. The legendary boxer was killed in a plane crash en route to
a birthday party in Newton, Iowa on August 31, 1969, one day short of his 46th
birthday. "Paid by Renewal" stamp touches the upper loop of the "M" and the
second "a" in Marciano. Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper right and mid-lower
margin. Staple holes at upper blank corner. Fine condition.
