ROD LANGWAY
Sans helmet, the Hall of Famer captain is shown in his Washington
Capitals uniform in this 7¾x11 newspaper photograph.
Magazine photograph signed: "Rod/Langway/#5", Color 7¾x11
affixed to a 8x11 card (2 surfaces). Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of
China on March 8, 1961, Rod Langway was an American defenseman in the NHL.
Langway's father was stationed in Taiwan when Langway was born, making the
defenseman the only NHL player to have been born in the Republic of China.
Growing up in Massachusetts, Langway began playing hockey at the age of 13,
leading his high school team to state tourneys in 1973 and 1975. He began
playing for the NHL when he was drafted in 1977 by the Montreal Canadiens
(1978-1982) and would go on to play with the Washington Capitals
(1982-1993) for the rest of his professional career. When traded to the
Capitals, Langway was named as captain of the team, where under his guidance
the Capitals were finally able to make the playoffs. His success during his
career earned him the nickname the "Secretary of Defense" and earned him
an induction into the Hall of Fame in 2002. After retiring from hockey,
Langway went on to coach on and off from 1995 to 2004, last coaching the
Richmond Riverdogs. Light wear on corners. Light surface impressions from being
affixed. Otherwise, fine condition.
