He pens a letter on a picture postcard showing kangaroos to Phyllis Diller quoting the lyrics of songwriter Cole Porter
Autograph Letter signed: "Rod McKuen", 1p, 5½x4 picture postcard, postmarked Potts Point, New South Wales, Australia, October 9, 1981. Addressed in his own hand to comedian Phyllis Diller, Brentwood, California. In full: "Birds do it ... bees do it ... even educated fleas do it - I love you - am looking at your photo in Sibel [?] bar." Poet, singer, songwriter and actor Rod McKuen (1933-2015) was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Song (1970, "Jean", The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) and Best Score (1971, A Boy Named Charlie Brown). He won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word recording, Lonesome Cities (1968). Some critics deride McKuen's poems as overly sentimental, but no less a poet than W. H. Auden praised them as "love letters to the world." In this letter McKuen quotes the lyrics of another skillful songwriter Cole Porter. Fine condition.
