Photograph signed: "Best Luck/ Rod Rodgers/ December 1978" in
black ink. B/w, 10x8. December 1978. Dancer Rod Rodgers (1938-2002)
was best known for his modern-dance choreography which often address social
themes and expanded stereotypes about black dancers. Born into a
second-generation of black choreographers in New York, Rodgers grew frustrated
with the limited opportunities that "black dance" (mostly bold, accessible and
jazz-driven or social-protest works) allowed. His style and technique earned him
fame in the 1968 production "Tangents", which went on to represent his
expressive ingenuity. He founded a racially integrated company in 1966, the
Rod Rodgers Company, which is still in existence today in New York. Ink
stamp on verso. Ink notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine
condition.
