In full: "I am in London, and therefor (sic) to (sic) far away to handle the enclosed as I would like to -- so, I wonderf wonder if you would exaime (sic) the proposed changes on the yellow papers and also the white orginal (sic) of Oct. 27, 1960- and advise me as to the worth of the contract -- In short, is it a good deal -- 1. I don't intend to eliminate dresser as on the road I need one more than in N.Y. 2. I do not intend to work for less than $2000 a week+ (plus) a percentage on the road OR IN NEW YORK. 3. Please explain the % (percentage) to me. 4. I decided to make notes on the yellow sheets, it's simpler. 5. I have written a letter to Eddie Van Clive at M.C.A. in New York who is representing me in this deal - contact her (sic) if you chose (sic). Please excuse my asking for your help and advise (sic) on such short notice, but I am caught in London, while Claire is rehearsing and so--. Claire is wonderful, the baby is beautiful and I am thinner - what more can a man ask for. Please -- in short -- I am asking -- 1. Is this a first class deal? 2. Is it better for me than the original agreement? 3. I want a 1st class star deal -- am I getting it. Please answer as soon as possible - Thank you." Steiger had received Oscar nominations in 1954 (Best Supporting Actor, On the Waterfront) and 1965 (Best Actor, The Pawnbroker). He won the 1967 Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying a well-meaning but prejudiced Southern sheriff in In the Heat of the Night.
