ROD STEIGER. Rare ALS: "Rod Steiger", 2p, 8x10. No place,
1965 December 4. To Milton (his agent Milton Goldman). In full: "This
is a most difficult letter to write--but one I feel I must, to you--I have never
been happy with my movie representation on the west coast--I'm talking about the
period changed befor (sic) my luck changed again--I know
I need much stronger represtation (sic) in Europe (which for some reason
Hollywood still seems to ignore--as I have builet built a good
following through out Europe, I need a better organized force their
(sic)--this is the main reason I am going to William Morris. I explain
this to you, because I think you are the best in N.Y. for theatre- -and I'm
sorry to loose (sic) you their (sic)--but I feel I must make this
move now. In short Milton-I'm sorry to leave you as an agent but I hope you
understand as a friend. My best to Arnold, always my very best to you."
Arnold Weissberger was his lawyer. Steiger had received Oscar nominations
in 1954 (Best Supporting Actor, On the Waterfront) and 1965 (Best Actor,
The Pawnbroker). He won the 1967 Academy Award for Best Actor for
portraying a well-meaning but prejudiced Southern sheriff in In the Heat of
the Night. Creased. Folds, vertical one touches the "t" in Steiger.
