Check No. 896, drawn on his account at Security-First National Bank of Los Angeles, Prudential Square Branch, payable to General Telephone Company for $81.16. Not windowed to show verso. Matted to 12x18 with photograph, color, 7x9½. Mat has irregular upper edge. Unrelated labels on verso. In the year he signed this check, Steiger starred in one feature film, Cry Terror!, and was a guest star on episodes of TV's Suspicion, Playhouse 90 and Schlitz Playhouse of Stars. Rod Steiger (1925-2002) was awarded the 1967 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a well-meaning but prejudiced Southern sheriff in In the Heat of the Night. He also received Oscar nominations in 1954 (Best Supporting Actor, On the Waterfront) and 1965 (Best Actor, The Pawnbroker). Steiger's other film credits include Oklahoma! (1955), The Longest Day (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), Lucky Luciano (1974), W.C. Fields and Me (1976), The Amityville Horror (1979), American Gothic (1987), The Player (1992) and Mars Attacks! (1996). From 1959-1969, he was married to actress Claire Bloom. Show through from bank stamp on verso and cancellation holes, not at signature.
