The Oscar-winning actor agrees to appear in a Playhouse 90 episode scripted by Rod Serling.
Document signed: "Rod Steiger", 2p (front and verso), 8½x11. Also initialed 5 times: "R S". Hollywood, California, 1958 May 27. Steiger agrees to appear in a CBS television Playhouse 90 production on June 19, 1958, for $10,000. Signed on front. Printed Terms and Conditions on verso have been amended at 3 points, initialed by Steiger at each, the effect of which are to limit his publicity obligations to promotion of the program. He has also initialed two riders, affixed to front. One rider (8½x2½) promises Steiger "first star billing." The other (8½x2¾) stipulates that compensation for any replays of the broadcast will be negotiated in good faith between the parties, but shall in no case exceed the amount of the original compensation. Rod Steiger (1925-2002) was awarded the 1967 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a well-meaning but prejudiced Southern sheriff in In the Heat of the Night. He also received Oscar nominations in 1954 (Best Supporting Actor, On the Waterfront) and 1965 (Best Actor, The Pawnbroker). From 1959-1969, he was married to actress Claire Bloom one of his five marriages. They co-starred in the 1969 films, Three Into Two Won't Go and The Illustrated Man. Steiger's other film credits include Oklahoma! (as Jud Fry, 1955), The Longest Day (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), Lucky Luciano (1974), W.C. Fields and Me (1976), The Amityville Horror (1979), American Gothic (1987), The Player (1992) and Mars Attacks! (1996. The TV play contracted here appeared as a sheriff in "A Town Has Turned to Dust", written by Rod Serling (whose Twilight Zone would debut in 1959). Staple and binder holes at top, the latter broken through to edge of paper. Riders affixed with staples. Light corner creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
