RODDY McDOWALL
Published collection of photographs taken of, and by, celebrities, inscribed to actress Laraine Day, whose photograph of Lew Ayres is included in the book. From Day's personal collection!
Book inscribed and signed twice: "dear Laraine/Thanks for your/help/Roddy/Roddy McDowall", 10¼x14, 256 pages, Double Exposure, Take Four by Roddy McDowall. N.Y: William Morrow & Co., 1993, Hardcover and Dust Jacket. The arrival of London-born RODDY McDOWALL (1928-1998) in Hollywood came when he tested for the juvenile lead in Fox's How Green Was My Valley (1941), winning both the role and a long contract. McDowall's first adult acting assignment was as Malcolm in Orson Welles' 1948 film version of Macbeth. The actor spent the better part of the early 1960s playing Octavian in the mammoth production Cleopatra, co-starring with longtime friend Elizabeth Taylor. An accomplished photographer, McDowall was honored by having his photos of Taylor and other celebrities frequently published in the leading magazines of the era. McDowall's most frequent assignments between 1968 and 1975 found him in elaborate simian makeup in the Planet of the Apes theatrical films and TV series. Shortly before his death, the Academy of Motion Pictures named its photo archive after him. The volume offered here is a collection of many stunning celebrity photos taken by other celebrities. This copy is inscribed to actress Arlene Dahl (1917-2007), who contributed her photo of actor Lew Ayres to the volume. (Dahl says of her subject in her printed introduction to the photo: "Lew Ayres is one of the most wonderful men I've ever worked with - talented, intelligent, very kind, true to himself. And he has the most marvelous sense of humor - funny, offbeat, charming." The book was part of her estate. Top edge of book lightly toned. Fine condition.
