Autograph Letter signed: "Roger W Babson", 1p, 5½x8½.
Wellesley, Massachusetts, 1941 June 6. On personal letterhead to "Dear
Mr. Fay". In full: "I was delighted to know you would like one of
my pictures. Under separate cover one is on its way.[Item not included.][2 words illegible] you." Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right
corner. Roger W. Babson (1875-1967), who began his business career with a
Boston investment firm, had founded Babson's Statistical Organization, later
called Babson's Reports, with an initial investment of $1,200 in 1904. As a
pioneering business in the financial services industry, the firm realized
millions of dollars in annual revenues in its first decade. Babson also shared
his expertise through columns in such publications as the "Saturday Evening
Post" and "The New York Times", eventually forming his own syndicate, the
Publishers Financial Bureau. In 1919, Babson founded a business school, The
Babson Institute, which became Babson College (Wellesley, Massachusetts), a
prestigious college emphasizing entrepreneurship, in 1969. Herbert W. Fay
(b. 1859), the addressee, was curator of the Abraham Lincoln Monument in
Springfield, Illinois, and a noted collected of portrait photographs of famous
persons. Light mailing folds. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine
