ROGER G. BANNISTER
The record breaking runner signs his name "With best wishes"
Autograph sentiment signed: "With best wishes from/Roger Bannister", in black ink, 6x4. On May 6, 1954, Roger G. Bannister (b. 1929) ran the first sub-four-minute mile in recorded history. The 25-year-old native of Harrow on the Hill, England, completed the distance in 3:59.4 at Oxford. After his record-breaking run, Bannister and friends partied at night clubs until nearly dawn, yet Bannister showed up on time for medical classes the next morning, looking fresh. Australian miler John Landy soon recorded a sub-4 minute mile of his own. The two had a showdown race, which Bannister won. At the end of the year, Bannister retired from running to pursue his medical studies full-time. He later became a neurologist. Corners slightly worn and creased. Pencil notes (unknown hand). Fine condition.
