ROGER BANNISTER and CHRISTOPHER CHATAWAY.
Black and white photograph signed by both Bannister and Chataway
Photograph signed: "Roger Bannister", "Chris Chataway". B/w, 10x8 overall (3 images on one surface). Larger image on right (4¾x5¼) shows Bannister crossing the finishing line. Images on left show the track under construction, and runners beginning the race. On May 6, 1954, Roger BANNISTER ran the first sub-four-minute mile in recorded history. The 25-year-old native of Harrow on the Hill, England, completed the distance in 3:59.4 at Oxford. He was helped in his pursuit of the record by two other runners, CHRIS CHATAWAY and Chris Basher, who by prearrangement helped him set a pace during the race. After his record-breaking run, Bannister, Chataway and Basher and their girl friends partied at night clubs until nearly dawn, yet Bannister showed up on time for medical classes the next morning, looking fresh. Australian miler John Landy soon recorded a sub-4 minute mile of his own. The two had a showdown race, which Bannister won. At the end of the year, Bannister retired from running to pursue his medical studies full-time. He later became a neurologist. Bannister's close friend Chataway had a distinguished career of his own as a sportscaster for the BBC and then as a long-serving Member of Parliament, serving as Minister of Industrial Development under Prime Minister Edward Heath (1972-1974).
