MARIS broke Babe Ruth's 34-year-old major league record of 60 home runs in one season when he hit 61 in 1961. National Leaguer Mark McGwire broke Maris' 37-year-old major league record by hitting 70 home runs in 1998, but Maris' 61 is still the American League record. Baseball Hall of Famer ORLANDO CEPEDA won Rookie of the Year honors in 1958 when he belted 25 homers, led the NL with 38 doubles, knocked in 96 runs and batted .312. As a sophomore, he upped his figures to 27 home runs, 105 RBI, and .317. In 1961, he moved to first base, trading positions with McCovey, and led the NL in home runs with 46 and RBI with 146, becoming more popular in San Francisco than teammate Willie Mays. TIM McCARVER, now a sportscaster, appeared in eight games with the Cardinals in 1959 at the age of 17 and in six games with the Phillies in 1980 to become a four-decade player. In the World Series, he was the leading hitter with a .478 average on 11 hits. McCarver's 13 triples in 1966 made him the only catcher to lead a league in that category, and he went on to have his best season in 1967. Although he faded after leading the NL with a .355 average at mid-season, he finished with career highs in average (.295), homers (14) and RBI (69). The Cardinals won the World Series, and McCarver placed second in the MVP balloting to teammate Orlando Cepeda. Lightly creased. Lightly shaded at upper and lower margins.
