ROGER PRICE
Inventor of the fifties "Droodles" sends this letter to Phyllis Diller, jokingly sends the letter typed upside down with the letterhead at the bottom of the page
Typed Letter signed: "Roger", 1 page, 8½x11. Burbank, California, no date. On letterhead of Columbia Pictures (typed upside down) to actress/comedienne Phyllis Diller. In full: "I got your card and noted it was postmarked L A so I assume you paused briefly between jobs in Oregon and Sarasota to spend All Hallows Eve (one of the most ancient, incidentally, of holidays. Unfortunately no longer devoted to saturnalia and sexual wickedness out in the bushes). I am here at Columbia for no apparent reason. It is a nice building. Of course they printed all the stationery upside down. But thye can correct that on the next printing. I am here with Leonard Stern. Doing not much. He is writing a movie and I am hanging around. Have to have someplace to go or else I would Garden myself to death. I am big with Lunch and betting on the Footballs on Sunday. No longer do I play cards. Wish I could find a medium game (3 or 4 hundred $ swing). Do you ever get to the Valley. Please alert me and we can (a) lunch (b) bet on the footballs or (c) have a saturnalia. I did recycle the first book I ever wrote and P.S.S. (Price Stern Sloan publishers) are eventually bringing it out. I hope they print it right side up. Luv". Roger PRICE (1918-1990), a comedy writer, publisher and TV game show panelist in the 1950s, created Droodles, doodle riddles: simple sets of lines on paper, for which aviewer was expected to guess a title. Price's books, Droodles and Classic Droodles are reissued every few years. Price should not be confused with another comedy writer of the same name, born in 1941. Leonard STERN, Price's publishing partner, was a TV screenwriter who contributed many episodes to such classic hits as The Honeymooners and Get Smart. Many spelling and typographical errors, some of which have been corrected in ink. Lightly creased in right margin, with 1-inch tear there, and ¼-inch paper separation at left of lower horizontal fold. Otherwise, fine condition. The upside down letterhead is deliberate, as noted in the text.
