National Environmental Research Center, signs his name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "Rog Morton" in black ink. 1 page, 7x9.
Original mailing envelope included. Written on U.S. Secretary of the Interior
letterhead. Washington, D.C., stamped October 18, 1972. Addressed to Mr. Ernie
Minor of the National Environmental Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. In
full: "The fine work you did in preparation for my visit to Cincinnati,
certainly paid off. Everything went so smoothly. In fact, thanks to your
efforts, we received the royal treatment. I especially wish to thank you for the
invitation I received from Frank Dale. It was a delightful afternoon and I
thoroughly enjoyed the relaxation. With kindest regards. Yours sincerely".
Rogers C.B. Morton (1914-1979) was Secretary of the Interior under
Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford (1971-1975). A former WWII veteran,
Morton had served as U.S. Congressman from Maryland (1963-1971) and
Chairman of the Republican National Committee (1969-1971) before taking
the Cabinet post. He was later Secretary of Commerce (1975-1976) under
Ford, and Morton headed Ford's unsuccessful re-election campaign. Morton was the
brother of Thurston B. Morton (1907-1982), also a former Congressman
(representing Kentucky, 1947-1953) and Chairman of the Republican National
Committee (1959-1961) as well as a Republican U.S. Senator from Kentucky
(1957-1968). Normal mailing folds. Slightly toned. Corners rounded. Light
surface creases. Slightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
