ROLAND CULVER - AUTOGRAPH 1941 CO-SIGNED BY: GEORGE DOONAN - HFSID 78478
Price: $180.00
ROLAND CULVER and GEORGE DOONAN. Signature: "Roland
Culver/1941" and, on verso, "Best Wishes/Doris
Bentley" and "Smatter withchoo/Geo. Doonan"
and one unidentified signer, 6½x5¼ album leaf. Newspaper photograph, b/w,
1¼x2 of unidentified signer affixed at upper right margin of verso. Pencil notes
(unknown hand) to left of photo: "(The Great Little Comedian)". English
actor ROLAND CULVER (1900-1984) appeared in films for over 50 years,
usually in supporting roles. In 1941, the year he signed this leaf, Culver
appeared in three films: One of Our Aircraft is Missing, This is
England and Quiet Wedding. His film credits also include The
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Dead of Night (1945),
To Each His Own (1946) and The Magic Box (1951). British
actor GEORGE DOONAN (1897-1973) appeared in several British "shorts" of the
1940s and in The Entertainer (1960) and Shadow of the Cat (1961).
He is the father of actors Patric and Tony Doonan. We were unable to
verify the identities of Doris Bentley and the comedian, whose first name is
Ivor. He is not, however, today's British Jewish comedian Ivor Dembina, who has
successfully toured with the one-man shows, SadoJudiasm and This is
Not a Subject for Comedy, as this leaf was signed circa 1941. Lightly
creased at lower right blank corner. Slightly shaded. Irregular right edge from
removal from bound book. Overall, fine condition.
