American actor Roland Winters (1904-1989), born Roland Winternitz in Boston, is best known for playing Hollywood's third incarnation of Charlie Chan. A veteran of stage and radio, Winters had debuted in films in 1947, and he would play the Chinese detective in four previous films (The Chinese Ring, 1947; Docks of New Orleans, The Shanghai Chest and The Golden Eye, all 1948) before teaming up with Luke. Winters also appeared in a number of other films and in made-for-TV movies, TV miniseries and TV series. He was a frequent guest star on TV series from 1951 (The Web) until 1973 (Adam's Rib).
