ROMAN L. HRUSKA and CARL T. CURTIS
The United States Senators who represented Nebraska for over 20 years each signed this First Day Cover in remembrance of President John F. Kennedy
First Day Cover Signed: “Roman Hruska/ U.S.S. Nebraska” and “Carl T. Curtis/ U.S.S. Nebraska”. 6½x3¾. Postmarked Brookline, Massachusetts, May 29, 1967. The First Day Cover features a rectangular 2½x3½ seal with an emblem featuring President John F. Kennedy. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Roman Hruska (1904-1999), a former attorney, was a Republican U.S. Senator from Nebraska from 1954-1976. Previously, he represented the state as a U.S. Congressman (1953-1954). Hruska is best known for a comment he made regarding President Richard Nixon's Supreme Court nominee Harold Carswell.Hearing someone accuse Carswell of mediocrity, Hruska responded that there were many mediocre people and judges, and mediocrity deserved representation on the Court. Despite Hruska's controversial speech, the Carswell nomination was rejected. He was also a staunch supporter of Richard Nixon, even after the Watergate Scandal. Nebraskan Carl T. Curtis (1905-2000), a Republican, served in the US House of Representatives (1939-1954) and Senate (1954-1979). Known for his anti-communism and fiscal conservatism, Curtis was Barry Goldwater's floor manager at the 1964 Republican National Convention. He loyally supported President Nixon on the Vietnam War and throughout the Watergate crisis. After leaving the Senate he was a leader of the American Freedom Coalition, a conservative advocacy group.
