ROMY SCHNEIDER
3½x5½ picture postcard of the actress shown posing with a dog
Picture Postcard Signed: "Romy Schneider". B/w, 3½x5½. Circa
1963. Once billed as "the German Shirley Temple," even though she started
her career at 15, Romy Schneider (1938-1982, born Rosemarie
Albach-Retty in Vienna, Austria) got her start in a series of comedies
about the Austro-Hungarian Empress Elizabeth before turning to more mature
roles. Schneider was an excellent actress with numerous starring roles,
successfully tackling Orson Welles' The Trial (1963) and winning two
Cesar awards (the French version of the Academy Awards) for L'important c'est
d'aimer (1975) and Une historie simple (1978) and a Golden Globe
nomination for The Cardinal (1963). Despite this, she was typecast as
an exotic sex kitten in Hollywood during the 1960s, including a starring role
as Carole in What's New, Pussycat? (1965). In all, she has over 60 TV
shows and movies to her credit, mostly in French and German-language
productions. Since 1984, a Romy Schneider Prize has been given annually in
France to the most promising new actress. Lightly bowed. Corners lightly
creased. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Mailing stamps on verso. Otherwise,
fine condition.
