Topps Baseball card, no. 331. Ron Herbel (1938-2000) was an American MLB
pitcher who played for the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, New York
Mets and the Atlanta Braves between 1963 and 1971. Picked up as an amateur
free agent by San Francisco in 1958, Herbel debuted in the MLB with the Giants
in 1963, finishing his career with the Braves in 1971. While he was skilled
pitcher, posting a win-loss record of 42-37 with 3.83 ERA and 447 strikeouts,
Herbel was terrible at bat, scoring just a .029 batting average--the lowest
batting average in Major League history. In 1970, he led the National League
in pitching appearances. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine
condition.
