Silver got his first big break when he starred opposite Anne Bancroft in Garbo Talks (1984). He earned critical acclaim in 1989 for starring in Fellow Traveler, and that same year won a Tony and Drama Desk Award for Speed the Plow. Silver had recurring roles in a number of TV shows, including Tommy Wilmette in Chicago Hope (1996-1997), Alec Bilson in Veronica's Closet (1998-1999), Larry Goldman in Skin (2003-2004), Bruno Gianelli in The West Wing (2001-2006) and Bernie Adler in Law & Order (2004-2007).
