RONALD E. McNAIR
He sends an autograph letter answering an admirer's questions
Autograph Letter Signed: "Dr. Ron McNair" 1p, 8½x11. No place, no date but probably 1978. On lower half of the Typed Letter Signed written by Susan Tucker to McNair congratulating him on his selection as an astronaut, asking him "if it was a lifelong dream of yours to be a part of the U.S. Space Program or if not, at what age or stage of your previous career did you decide to change your goals to space exploration?" McNair writes, in full: "At age 26 (1976) when NASA began its search for scientist-astronauts, I switched my career goals from that of a research physicist to that of a 'space-bound' research physicist. In essence, I haven't really switched - only supplemented." McNair has also written "Picture" on verso [no photograph present]. Ronald McNair (1950-1986) was selected as an astronaut in January 1978. He made his first flight on February 3-11, 1984 aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle (41-B), which featured the first untethered "walk in space" by Bruce McCandless. On January 28, 1986, McNair and his six colleagues perished aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle flight (51-L) when it exploded 73 seconds after liftoff. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
