Official NASA photo of the crew of STS-11/41B, with Bob Stewart and
Bruce McCandless in spacesuits and the rest of the crew in blue NASA jumpsuits,
signed by four of the five crew members. This was McNair's first shuttle
flight before the ill-fated flight of Challenger mission
STS-51L.

image 7½x8¾ (one surface). Captioned: "Space Shuttle Orbiter
OV-099/(Challenger) Crew Members" with NASA logo. The five-man crew of the first
shuttle to land in Florida. The Feb. 3-11, 1984 mission included the first
untethered space walk by Mission Specialist BRUCE McCANDLESS and a
docking with the Russian spacecraft Soyuz-T10 on Feb. 9. Vance Brand (who
did not sign this photo) was the Commander and ROBERT L. "HOOT" GIBSON
was the pilot. This was also the first space flight for mission specialists
ROBERT STEWART and RONALD McNAIR (1950-1986, born in Lake City,
South Carolina)... and the last for McNair. McNair's next assignment was aboard
Challenger 51-L, which exploded 73 seconds after launch on Jan. 28,
1986. Pen skipped while signing Gibson's signature, which is still legible.
