RONALD NEAME
The Academy Award nominated English director writes a letter to a fan in Michigan.
Typed Letter signed: "Ronald Neame", 1 page, 8½x11. Beverly Hills, California, 1984 November 29. Written to Mr. Jim Thompson, Alpena, Michigan. In full: "Dear Mr. Thompson: Thank you for your letter and for your en-thusiasm about my films. I don't have any plans to write about my filmmaking at the moment, but maybe one day. Meanwhile I'm returning the photographs, duly signed, and in case it might be of interest to you, a photograph of myself, also signed. Sincerely," English film director, cinematographer and screenwriter Ronald Neame (1911-2010) was born in London, England. The son of actress Ivy Close, he began his film career as a cinematographer in the 1933 film Happy. Over the next twelve years he worked as a cinematographer on nearly 50 films and earned an Academy Award nomination for his effects work on the 1942 film One of Our Aircraft Is Missing. In 1947, Neame directed his first film Take My Life (1947), and directed 25 more films over the next four decades. His films include The Card (1952), Tunes of Glory (1960), I Could Go On Singing (1963), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), First Monday in October (1981) and Foreign Body (1986). He also scored two Academy Award nominations for his screenwriting work with Brief Encounter (1945) and Great Expectations (1946). In 1996, Neame was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and was awarded the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Fellowship Award for his contributions to the film industry.
