ROSALIND RUSSELL and EDGAR BERGEN
Russell accepts $1,000 to appear on Bergen's radio program.
Document signed: "Rosalind Russell", "Edgar Bergen", 4 pages,
8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1950 November 9. Documentary letter from
Russell to Bergen, confirming their understanding that she will appear on the
Edgar Bergen- Charlie McCarthy radio program on December 3, and participate in
rehearsals as advised. She commits not to appear on any other radio show for a
period within a week of this date. Russell is to be paid $1,000 for this
performance. Signed by both on page 4. Nominated for Best Actress Academy
Awards for My Sister Eileen (1942), Sister Kenny (1946),
Mourning Becomes Electra (1947) and Auntie Mame (1958), the
beautiful and stylish ROSALIND RUSSELL (1908-1976)shone in
romantic comedies. She was frequently cast as an efficient career girl who
traded witticisms with her leading men, appearing in such films as His Girl
Friday (1940) and Take a Letter Darling (1942). Known for her charity
work, Russell received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1972, a
special Oscar. Ventriloquist EDGAR BERGEN (1903-1978) and his dummy,
Charlie McCarthy, were first heard over Rudy Vallee's radio program on December
17, 1936 and were an immediate hit. Bergen was promptly signed, and
Bergen and McCarthy starred on NBC and later on CBS from 1937-1956.
Charlie McCarthy was a sarcastic boy who managed to get into trouble, which
always worried Edgar Bergen. McCarthyisms included: "Ambition is just an excuse
for those without the good sense to be lazy" and "Hard work never killed anyone,
but why take the chance?" Bergen was the father of Emmy Award-winning actress
Candice Bergen. Staple holes at top left corner. Toned. Lightly creased.
Otherwise, fine condition.
