ROSCOE ATES and GRACE BRADLEY BOYD
The western stars sign opposite sides of a yellow album leaf.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "For Lyle/Rosco Ates" and on verso "To Lyle/Happiness always/Grace Bradley Boyd", 6x4½ yellow album leaf, with a black and white magazine photograph of Boyd affixed on verso (2 surfaces). Accompanied by an unsigned black and white photograph showing Ates atop a horse. ROSCO ATES (1895-1962) was a concert violinist before turning vaudeville comedian. He became a prolific character actor, often adding humor to Western films starring Johnny Mack Brown, Eddie Dean and others. He revived a youthful stutter for comic effect, imitated in his inscription here. From 1946 to 1948, he starred as Soapy Jones in 15 movies. He appeared frequently on TV, mostly in Westerns, until shortly before his death. He made multiple appearances on such series as Lawman, Maverick and also Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Actress and dancer GRACE BRADLEY BOYD (born in 1913) was already established in Broadway and movie musicals (Anything Goes, 1936) and in other prominent film roles when she married actor William Boyd in 1937. Boyd had made the first of his 66 Hopalong Cassidy movies in 1935. Popular in theatres, the films became an even bigger hit when edited for 1950s television. Although Grace Bradley Boyd appeared in many promotions as Hoppy's wife, she never co-starred in a Hopalong Cassidy film. Ink notes (unknown hand) on both sides of album leaf (not affecting signatures). Three filing holes at left. Lightly toned (affecting Ates signature, still legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
