ROSCOE CONKLING. ALS: "Roscoe Conkling", 1½p, 5½x8½, separate sheets. New York, 1883 April
8. To Col. Chas. D. Miller, Geneva, N.Y. In full: "A friend asks me to find him a pair of horses, or two single
ones to match, say 15½ hands, of fair style, to
drive, able to do three minutes at least. Can you out of your enviable knowledge
tell me where they are? I do not wish to bother you, but to enquire. Thanking
you in advance." Conkling had resigned from the U.S. Senate in 1881 to
protest President Garfield's appointments. In 1882, appointed by President
Arthur to the Supreme Court and confirmed by the Senate, Conkling declined to
accept. Lightly creased. Horizontal fold touches the "onk" in Conkling. Fine
condition.
