ROSCOE "FATTY" ARBUCKLE
Vintage 7½x9½ photo with a clever inscription to songwriter/producer Mort Greene:
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To my pal Mort Green/This is an expression you/acquire when
you play for/Fox, wondering where your/next is - Sh. I'm only kiddin./Sincerely yours,/Roscoe
Arbuckle/Feb 1st 1928". Sepia, 7½x9½. Joining Mack Sennett's Keystone Kops in 1913,
Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle (1887-1933) quickly rose to stardom in a series of short silent
film comedies with such costars as Mabel Normand, Charlie Chaplin and Chester
Conkling. From 1916, he wrote and directed many of his own films as well as some of the
other stars of comedy. In 1921, at the peak of success after signing a huge contract with
Paramount Pictures, Arbuckle's career was ruined by a sexual assault scandal. After three
trials, two hung juries, and an acquittal, Arbuckle was found innocent but public opinion
forced Arbuckle's retirement from the screen. He made a brief comeback under the alias
William Goodrich (he signed a six-film contract with Warner Bros. in 1932 and a feature film
contract in 1933), he passed away. Songwriter (and later TV producer) Mort Greene (often
credited as Mort Green), 1912-1992, arrived in Hollywood in 1931 (just when Arbuckle
was attempting a comeback), and was soon writing movie songs for Republic and other
studios. Greene had another talent, too: he could write gags. By the 1950s, he was producing
for television, specializing in variety shows featuring Milton Berle, Perry Como, Andy
Williams and Red Skelton, among others. Margins and corners lightly soiled. Small notch and
moisture stain at lower margin. Paper tape on verso around entire outer edges. Poor contrast in
some areas of inscription. Otherwise, fine condition.
