ROSE KENNEDY
She signs an envelope with a stamp honoring motherhood
Envelope signed: "Rose Kennedy", 6½x3½. Postmarked Washington, D. C., May 2, 1934, with 3-cent stamp honoring Mothers of America and bearing the image of the famed "Whistler's Mother" painting. Envelope address by an unknown hand to Dr. Irving O. Thomas in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and captioned in the same hand "Mother's Day 1934". Rose Kennedy (1890-1995), the eldest daughter of Boston mayor John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, married Joseph P. Kennedy against her father's wishes on October 7, 1914. The couple had nine children, including US President John Kennedy, and Senators and Presidential candidates Robert and Edward Kennedy. She outlived all but four of her children. Rose's own mother, Mary Fitzgerald, lived until 1964 (aged 98). Rose Kennedy stoically endured husband Joseph's many affairs, concentrating on raising the young Kennedys. In 1934, all of Rose Kennedy's children were born; the youngest, Edward, was born in 1932. Irving O. Thomas (1902-1977) was a surgeon at Wilkes-Barre's General Hospital. He collected envelope signatures from several women of the Kennedy family. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on front and verso. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
