ROSE OF THE GOLDEN WEST MOVIE CAST: MARY ASTOR and GILBERT ROLAND
Mary Astor and Gilbert Roland sign a movie still from their movie Rose of the Golden West.
Photograph signed: "Mary Astor" and "Gilbert Roland". Sepia, 7¼x9. Scene from the 1927 tale of California's Spanish days. Juan (Roland) is about to elope with the convent-bred Elena (Astor) when he is chosen to assassinate the governor, who happens to be Elena's father. She discovers the scheme, the plot is foiled and Elena ends up with Juan. ASTOR (1906-1987) had a successful silent screen career, co-starring with John Barrymore in Beau Brummell (1923) and Don Juan (1926). She won the 1941 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying chain-smoking concert pianist Sandra Kovak in Warner Bros.' The Great Lie, which starred Bette Davis. That same year, she costarred with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. In a movie career of more than half a century (1925-1982), ROLAND (b. 1905) played dashing leading men in both silent and talking films. Originally trained as a bullfighter, he was the only genuine Mexican to portray the Cisco Kid on screen (in 11 films). He received two Golden Globe nominations as Best Supporting Actor, for The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964). Lightly creased. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
