ROUBEN MAMOULIAN CO-SIGNED BY: AZADIA MAMOULIAN, EIDELL HEIDT, CHARLES P. HEIDT, DENISE JAUS, FRANCIS J. MYERS, LESLIE L. BIFFLE
Guestbook page signed by Hollywood director Rouben Mamoulian, Broadway producer Charles P. Heidt, Pennsyvanian Senator Francis J. Myers and Senate Secretary Leslie L. Biffle
Sigantures: "Azadia Mamoulian", "Rouben Mamoulian", "Eidell Heidt", "Charles P. Heidt" and "Denise Jaus", all in black ink, and on verso, "Francis P. Myers" and "Leslie L. Biffle," both in blue ink. With pencil notations in unknown hand. 9¼x2. ROUBEN MAMOULIAN (1897-1987, born in Tiflis, Georgia, Russian Empire, now Tbilisi, Georgia) was an American director. Mamoulian directed only 19 films between 1929 and 1959 - and was fired from what should have been his 20th, Cleopatra. But his work is some of the most influential in movie history. He got his start as an actor and then directing operas in Rochester, New York. From there, he was hired by Hollywood to direct in the new medium of talkie movies. His movies, beginning with Applause in 1929, introduced innovations like voice-overs conveying the internal monolgues of characters, diagonal wipes, split-screens, a mobile camera (which had been lost from the silent era, due to the limitations of microphones at the time), point-of-view shots and Hollywood's first three-strip Technicolor feature, Becky Sharp (1935). Mamoulian's actors also turned in fine performances; Fredric March from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) is the only actor to receive a Best Actor Oscar for a horror movie. His movies faltered commercially after Becky Sharp but found enduring commercial success on Broadway, with three adaptations of Porgy and Bess and another three of Oklahoma!. AZADIA MAMOULIAN, née Newman, was his wife. She married him in 1945. CHARLES P. HEIDT (1894 or 1895-1977) was a World War I combat pilot theatrical producer with two credits on Broadway. Mamoulian did staging and lighting design for his last play, Leaf and Bough (1949). MYERS (1901-1956, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was a teacher, lawyer or Democratic politician from Pennsylvania. He was representative from the state's 6th Congressional District from 1939-1945 and U. S. Senator from Pennsylvania and majority whip from 1949 to 1951. BIFFLE (1880-1966, born in Boydsville, Arkansas) was Secretary of the United States Senate from 1945 to 1946 and from 1948 to 1952. He was also confidential aide to and chief White House liaison of president Harry S. Truman. Lightly toned. Pen dribbled while signing Myers and Biffle's signatures. Biffle's signature is cut off at bottom. Myers and Biffle's signatures have bled slightly and bled through to other side. Light show-through from other side to Myers and Biffle's side. Irregular edges. Page has been torn neatly from album or book on one side. Otherwise in fine condition.
