5x3 card with the autograph sentiment of the "King of the Hillbillies"
Autograph sentiment signed: "Sincerely/Roy Acuff", 5x3 index card. Roy Acuff (1903-1992), with his Smoky Mountain Boys, recorded such country music hitsas "The Wabash Cannonball". Known as the "King of the Hillbillies", he also appeared in films, beginning with The Grand Ole Opry (1940). Acuff is credited with moving country music from the "hoedown" format to the star singer-based model which enhanced its international appeal. Incensed by a governor's remark that his "disgraceful" music was making Tennessee the hillbilly capital of America, Acuff ran for governor himself in 1948, and made a respectable showing. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1962 - the first living performer so honored. Opryland opened the Roy Acuff Theatre in 1979. Slightly soiled. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
