ROY CAMPANELLA
Oversize 16x20 photograph showing the Hall of Fame catcher crouching and punching
his glove.
Photograph signed: "Roy Campanella" in blue felt tip. Color 16x20. Roy Campanella
(1921-1993), the first catcher to break Major League Baseball's color barrier, split his two
decades of play (1937-1957) almost evenly between the Negro National League's
Baltimore Elite Giants and MLB's Brooklyn Dodgers. As a key component of
Brooklyn's "boys of summer", he played on 5 pennant winning Dodger clubs and
Brooklyn's only World Championship team, that of 1955. Three times the Most Valuable
Player (1951, 1953 and 1955), he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1969. An
automobile accident in January 1958 left him a paraplegic. Thereafter, he worked for the
Dodgers in community relations. Fine condition.
