Gentleman's Agreement (1947), he denied rooms to Jews; two decades later
in Hotel (1966), he played the same role, now turning away a black
couple. His last big screen role was that of a corrupt mayor in Chinatown
(1974). On television, Roberts entered what Hal Erickson of All Movie Guide
called his "dignified-foil" period, performing it in multiple episodes of Oh,
Susannah, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Lucy Show and
Bewitched, among other sitcoms. Light corner creases. Otherwise, fine
