ROY ROGERS and MONTE HALE
Two of Republic Pictures' "singing cowboys" pose in a Western town
with another actor.
Photograph signed: "Monte Hale" and "Roy Rogers".
B/w, 10x8. The actor between the two singing cowboys appears to be John
Payne, but we could find no record of the three appearing together in a film (it
is possible that they just posed together on a set). Rogers and Hale appeared
together in two films, Out California Way (1946) and Trail of Robin
Hood (1950). A founding member of the Western music group, Sons of the
Pioneers (1934), ROY ROGERS (1911-1998) broke into films as a singing
cowboy the following year. Beginning in 1938, he had starring roles in
dozens of Western films. His horse was Trigger, his frequent sidekick Gabby
Hayes, and his frequent co-star Dale Evans, whom he married in 1947. He
starred in his own TV series (1951-1957). A devoted husband and father, Rogers
was also a successful businessman with wide-ranging holdings, including a TV
production company, a restaurant chain and many Western products. Actor/singer
Monte Hale was discovered by a scout with Republic Pictures while performing in
USO shows during WWII. Hired as a possible replacement for Roy Rogers, MONTE
HALE (1919-2009) was relegated to supporting roles in such serials as The
Purple Monster Strikes before starring in his own films beginning in 1947.
After leaving Republic in 1950, Hale appeared on stage with country-western
bandleader Ray Whitley. He made his last film appearance in 1955 in
Giant. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners, light black marks
at upper and lower right corners. Minor surface creases (not evident head on).
Fine condition.
