SINGING COWBOYS: ROY ROGERS and MONTE HALE
Two of Republic Pictures' "singing cowboys" pose in a Western town with another actor.
Photograph signed: "Roy Rogers" and "Monte Hale". B/w, 10x7¾ overall, image 9¼x7½ (one surface). A founding member of the Western music group, Sons of the Pioneers (1934), ROY ROGERS (1911-1998) broke into films as a singing cowboy the following year. Beginning in 1938, he had starring roles in dozens of Western films. His horse was Trigger, his frequent sidekick Gabby Hayes, and his frequent co-star Dale Evans, whom he married in 1947. He starred in his own TV series (1951-1957). A devoted husband and father, Rogers was also a successful businessman with wide-ranging holdings, including a TV production company, a restaurant chain and many Western products. Actor/singer Monte Hale was discovered by a scout with Republic Pictures while performing in USO shows during WWII. Hired as a possible replacement for Roy Rogers, MONTE HALE (1919-2009) was relegated to supporting roles in such serials as The Purple Monster Strikes before starring in his own films beginning in 1947. After leaving Republic in 1950, Hale appeared on stage with country-western bandleader Ray Whitley. He made his last film appearance in 1955 in Giant. He's a member of the Western Music Association Hall of Fame. Lightly toned and creased. Light show-through from ink notations on verso (does not touch signatures). Otherwise in fine condition.
