The "King of the Cowboys" poses against a fence.
Photograph signed: "Roy Rogers". B/w, 8x10. Roy Rogers, who became known as "The King of the Cowboys", was born Leonard Slye on November 5, 1911, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked on his family's farm until 1929, when he packed up a guitar that he bought for $20 and headed west for Hollywood. He worked as a truck driver, peach picker and country singer before forming a group, the Sons of the Pioneers, in 1934. While in that group, he was known as Leonard Slye, then Dick Weston and, finally, Roy Rogers. Breaking into films as a singing cowboy in 1935, Rogers had starring roles in dozens of Westerns from 1938. From 1951-1957, he and Trigger, his golden palomino, starred in The Roy Rogers Show. Their co-stars included Dale Evans, "The Queen of the West", whom Rogers married in 1947, her horse, Buttermilk, Pat Brady (Roy's comic sidekick) and Bullet, the Wonder Dog. Rogers died in 1998. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners, ink smudges at upper right corner. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Fine condition.
