Envelope promoting a Los Angeles air show, an event held less than a year after his historic non-stop flight from New York to Panama
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Roy W. Ammel", 6½x3½. Air mail envelope with cachet celebrating the Air Fiesta, Los Angeles Airport, September 12-13, 1931. Roy William Ammel (1897-1963), born in Canby Minnesota, was a US Army pilot who saw combat in the skies of France in World War I. On November 9-10, 1930, Ammel flew his Lockheed Explorer monoplane Blue Flash non-stop from New York City to Panama, a feat never before accomplished. The Lockheed Explorer was not a successful aircraft; all four ever built crashed, and Ammel's was no exception. It crashed on take-off for the return flight from Panama, but Ammel survived. Lightly worn. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
