Philatelic Envelope signed: "Roy Wilkins", 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring W.C. Handy, 6-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Memphis, Tennessee, May 17, 1969, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Roy Wilkins (1901-1981), who had been appointed Assistant Executive Secretary of the NAACP in 1931, edited the organization's journal, "Crisis", from 1934-1949. He was Executive Secretary of the NAACP from 1955-1965 and served as Executive Director from 1965 until his retirement in 1977. Wilkins had played a major role in the preparation of the "Brown v Board of Education of Topeka" school desegregation case (1954) and was later one of the organizers of the 1963 March on Washington. He died in 1981. In 2001, Wilkins was honored on a 34-cent U.S. postage stamp. Slightly soiled upper edge. On verso, notes in unknown hand on inside of envelope flap (slight show through). Fine condition.
