Civil Rights Leader, Wilkins signs program from NAACP banquet
Program inscribed and signed: "For/John Fischback/with best
wishes/Roy Wilkins", 20p, 7½x11, Phoenix, Arizona, 1971 May 17.
Program for the Phoenix Chapter of the NAACP's Membership Banquet, held
at Del Webb's TowneHouse. Roy Wilkins (1901-1981), who had been appointed
Assistant Executive Secretary of the NAACP in 1931, edited the organization's
journal, "Crisis", from 1934-1949. He was Executive Secretary of the NAACP from
1955-1965 and served as Executive Director from 1965 until his retirement in
1977. Wilkins had played a major role in the preparation of the "Brown v Board
of Education of Topeka" school desegregation case (1954) and was later one of
the organizers of the 1963 March on Washington. He died in 1981. In 2001,
Wilkins was honored on a 34-cent U.S. postage stamp. Slightly soiled.
Lightly creased at left blank edge of front cover. Fine condition.
