Autographs: KING SUN KING LOUIS XIV (FRANCE) - DOCUMENT UNSIGNED 07/01/1703

Manuscript document signed by a deputy "Louis". 1 page, 13x10. July 2, 1703. In French, untranslated. King Louis XIV, whose reign from 1643-1715 was the longest in European history, chose the sun for his emblem and was called "Le roi-soleil" (The Sun King). His Court was the most magnificent in Europe and French letters and arts were in their golden age. In 1661, Louis XIV commissioned the building of the Palace of Versailles. During his 54-year-reign however, France was also embroiled in a number of wars, including the Devolution War (1667-1668), the Holland War (1672-1678), the Ten Years War (1688-1697) and the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714). The condition of the lower classes was made worse, as the populace was heavily taxed to raise funds for the war efforts, but Louis was unmoved by the plight of his people. His idea of government is best summed up in the words attributed to him: "L'état c'est moi" ("I am the state"). Encapsulated in plastic. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Pinhole near top edge. Folded thrice horizontally and three times vertically and unfolded. Worn and with pinholes along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.

Manuscript document signed by a deputy "Louis". 1 page, 19x11½. June 18, 1705. In French, not translated. Order to commission a captain of a company in the Infantry Regiment of Xaintonge for the Said Cheury. Lightly toned, soiled, stained and creased. Small creases and dents along bottom edge. Wax seal remnant near lower right corner. Large cut in lower right corner, which is missing. Folded twice horizontally and three times vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.

Manuscript Document Signed by a deputy: "Louis" and "Phelypeaux" 1p, 27x19¾.Written on vellum. Concerning Louis Fagon, son of the first physician to Louis XIV, and appointing Fagon to the Conseil Royal de Regence. LOUIS XV (1710-1774) reigned as King of France from 1715-1774, first with Philippe II, duc d'Orléans as Regent (1710-1723) and then guided by his advisor André Hercule de Fleury (1726-1743). The reign of the Bourbon king was known for both love and war. His mistresses, Madame de Pompadour and Madame du Barry, became as well known as the King himself. His 1725 marriage to Marie Leszcynska plunged France into the War of the Polish Succession. As a result of this and a number of succeeding wars, including the Seven Years War, expenses mounted, but Louis' court continued its extravagances and the government was nearly bankrupt by the end of his reign. His failure to solve the government's financial difficulties led directly to the French Revolution, which occurred during the reign of his successor, Louis XVI. Jean-Frederic PHELYPEAUX, COUNT MAUREPAS (1701-1781) succeeded his father as Secretary of Marine and the Royal Household for King Louis XV. He sided with the opponents of administrative and fiscal reform, and thus bears some responsibility for the French government's virtual bankruptcy by the time of the Revolution. However, he did support technical improvements that strengthened the French Navy. Horizontal and vertical fold creased with multiple ware holes at vertical fold. Lower edge has 6x2 piece missing and 4 vertical tears. Left edge ragged at lower section. Top edge creased and severely soiled. Foxing concentrated at left edge. Toned and stained throughout.
