RUBE GOLDBERG
14x11 black and white publicity photograph of Rube Goldberg pointing
to one of his drawings.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/John Anderson/Rube
Goldberg". B/w, 14x11 overall, image 10x8 (one surface). Reuben Lucius
Goldberg (1883-1970) created "Boob" (1915), a comic strip featuring a
young man whose interest in other people often got him into trouble. The strip
was syndicated by Hearst from 1918-1933. Another of the popular creations of
the engineer turned cartoonist was Professor Lucifer Butts, famous for his
inventions of mechanical contrivances of absurdly unnecessary complexity.
Webster's dictionary even added "rube goldberg" to its lexicon. Theta Tau, an engineering fraternity at Purdue
University, hosts an annual "Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, which attracts
nationwide attention. Goldberg was
awarded the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning for a work entitled
"Peace Today". Lightly creased. Slightly yellowed. Tape remnants in left
margin.
